Chris Evans helps elevate ‘What’s Your Number’ to decent — movie review

So, how many is too many when it comes to the number of sexual partners a person has had in their lives? I suppose there is a bit of a division between men and women. For men it can be a badge of honor but for women it can quickly become a scarlet letter of shame. But does the number of sexual partners really have anything to do with finding your true love?

Ally Darling (Faris) has come to the realization that she has been with more guys than her gal pals and nearly twice the average for women before they get married. To make things worse, she seems to be no closer to finding her ideal partner. Her younger sister is about to be married and she’s starting to feel the pressure from her family. So she declares the won’t sleep with another guy until she finds the man she will marry.

Enter Colin Shea (Chris Evans), her womanizing neighbor. Together they come up with the bright idea that he will help her track down her former boyfriends to determine if any of them deserve a second chance and she will help him get rid of the girls he bangs and can’t bring himself to send on their way when he is done with them. Sounds like a solid plan, right? Ah, but plans never go as they are intended and soon these two will be forced to look in the mirror and determine if they are the cause of their own dilemma.

Of course, during this fiasco, in which she realizes most of the guys she’s been with are losers and many of them are still losers, neither of them seem to realize they are perfect for each other. Watching Faris go track down her former lovers is entertaining but also forces the audience to think about their own history, which may be a shocking enough point to make and a strong place for such a light comedy to tread to begin with.

“What’s Your Number” isn’t as bad as you might think and even has some funny moments because Faris and Evans are pretty good together. Anna Faris can actually be pretty funny when she is allowed to play a good character and not a total moron. Unfortunately that isn’t often enough. Chris Evans, who is now full bore into playing Captain America, seems to have fun here playing more of a comic character instead of a comic book character.
