‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ is a terrific, but slowly paced, homage to neo-noir genre

SaintsAffleckCThose that know me, know I have a soft spot for film noir. Nowadays, movies get too far away from simply allowing characters and dialogue tell a story. “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” pays homage to the neo-noir films of the 1970s, and stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara as a couple of criminals who wants to start a new life together but find themselves unable to out run the law.

Writer and director David Lowery, making his feature film debut, has constructed an intimate story with a pretty simple plot. He is clearly inspired by the neo-noir films of the 70s from filmmakers like Terrence Malick and Robert Altman. t’s a quiet, but beautifully shot movie.

At times, it does get a little too slow. So be warned: Those going in looking for some intense shootouts or actions scenes are going to be sorely disappointed. But the acting carries the movie. Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster all give great performances.
