‘Getaway’ forgot to add character and plot to its 90 minute car chase

The end of the summer usually movies that make you wonder how or why they were even made. Boys and girls, 2013 is no different. I give you, “Getaway”, starring Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez. GETAWAY

The plot is nothing new. Ethan Hawke plays a former race car driver who, after his wife is taken, finds himself forced to do a bunch of crazy things for a maniac who barks his orders over the phone. Unfortunately, he never really does anything plot wise, except for lead Bulgarian police on wild chases that end up in crashes in explosions.

The problem with this movie is it is ALL action. In the first 35 minutes there are at least 3 chases involving police, but there is not one single moment that explains anything about the characters that isn’t made known in the 2 minute trailer. Unfortunately, at  just less than 90 minutes, there is zero time for any character development anywhere else.

All of the action is fun for a few minutes but once you hit that point where you realize that’s the only thing going for the movie it gets boring real fast.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the screenwriters had tried to throw in a few over the top plot twists or let Jon Voigt do anything more than talk on a phone. But the movie is pretty satisfied blowing things up even when it doesn’t make sense.
