…and the Winner is….The English Family Movie Awards Winners!!

It was murder trying to decide who would win this years awards.

For those of you that cared enough to read this, I will offer you a bit of a recap of last night’s English Family Movie Awards ceremony, which was held at the English Family Home Theatre in ******* ****, KS.  The host this year was Nicolas, who wore a St. Patrick’s Day 2010 shirt with a blue button up over it.  He introduced many of the awards on the evening.

The 2010 EFMA Nominations

Zoe, in her PJs and a purple robe and little Owen also handed out awards.  Owen stunned the whole crowd by wearing a Blue’s Clue’s shirt and warm up pants.

The big winner on the night was INCEPTION, which won 6 EFMAs, including Best Movie, Best Director, Best Fight and Best EndingKick Ass, which entered as the favorite pulled in three awards: Action Movie of the Year and Best Actor for Nicolas Cage.  I know what you’re thinking, ‘who the hell give Nicolas Cage an acting award?’.

Tron Legacy won three awards and Let Me In won two, including Scariest Movie of the Year.

Normally we do the awards during the Oscars but this year we decided to have our own night of fun.  We started by announcing winners then watched clips from How to Train Your Dragon, Kick Ass, Let the Right One In (since we don’t have the new version) before watching the last hour or so of Inception.

Stay tuned later this summer when we will be doing the First Ever English Family TV Awards….and check out the complete list of winners below.

BK Films and TV: Best Flicks of 2010

Well, I figured its about time I posted this.  But doing this entry I realized two things.  One, I didn’t see shit for movies last year and Two, there seemed to be a lot of shit movies that came out.  I even watched 100 Movies I’ve Never Seen Before over the summer, but only a handful were new releases.  Some may be included on this list….and the ones that were really good, that came out at the end of the year, I didn’t see any of them, except for one, which I saw this year.  It’s included in this list.

Tim’s “Best-Of” Two Thousand and Ten, in no particular order:

  • True Grit: Tim loves westerns and Jeff Bridges sure is all the fucking rage these days.  I loved this movie.  I’m not sure it’s AS GOOD as everyone is saying, but it’s pretty fucking good.  Extremely well directed and paced.  Just enough plot and characterization that you can follow along and give a shit and not have to take notes to figure out what’s going on.  Back to Jeff Bridges.  He’s awesome in this flick.  He deserves to be all the fucking rage he wants to be.
  • Shutter Island: yeah, I know, picking a Scorcese/DiCaprio is really stepping out of the fucking box, but its a good flick and I don’t know if anyone else really remembers it.  Great movie, well acted, spooky and weird even if I did figure out the “twist-ending” way too early.
  • Inception: Yay, more Leo!  Pretty fucking slick movie and it’s definitely one you’ll have to watch three or four times to fully understand it but its so god damn cool while its going on that it will be like three days before you’re like, “wait, did my fucking brain get sucked out and put in backwards?”  Christopher Nolan is starting to really make some bad ass movies….and Hans Zimmer’s music as always is awesome.
  • Kick-Ass: Everything a comic book movie should be.  Great action.  Exciting fight sequences.  Spot-on sense of humor and just a touch of tragic sadness that help you empathize with the hero.  Cage is awesome as Big Daddy, doing his character with a touch of ‘Adam West Batman’.
  • The Karate Kid: I really thought this would suck but it didn’t.  The soundtrack sucks all kinds of hell.  Was that Justin Bieber in there?  But Jackie Chan should get an Oscar nod.  Your opinion of Jaden Smith might depend on how you feel about Big Willie, because he might be a fucking clone of the Fresh Prince.
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: This might be my favorite flick of the year even though it’s only half way over.  No book to movie adaptions are perfect so don’t go in all nit-picky if you’ve read the books.  Enjoy what may be one of the best beginning to end movie sagas ever.  Seven movies with pretty much the same cast.  What other series has done that?
  • Toy Story 3: Animated movies for adults.  I cried.  My wife cried.  People in front of us and behind us cried.  Kids laughed at us because they don’t get the movie yet.  (my Toy Story 3 review)

There were some other good ones, but I’m not in the mood to defend Tron right now.  Plus let’s focus on the good shit coming out in 2011.  Captain America hopefully won’t suck…..and the end of Harry Potter….plus a new Mission:Impossible.  booyah!!

Happy New Year!!  -t.b. english
