BK Films and TV: Best Flicks of 2010

Well, I figured its about time I posted this.  But doing this entry I realized two things.  One, I didn’t see shit for movies last year and Two, there seemed to be a lot of shit movies that came out.  I even watched 100 Movies I’ve Never Seen Before over the summer, but only a handful were new releases.  Some may be included on this list….and the ones that were really good, that came out at the end of the year, I didn’t see any of them, except for one, which I saw this year.  It’s included in this list.

Tim’s “Best-Of” Two Thousand and Ten, in no particular order:

  • True Grit: Tim loves westerns and Jeff Bridges sure is all the fucking rage these days.  I loved this movie.  I’m not sure it’s AS GOOD as everyone is saying, but it’s pretty fucking good.  Extremely well directed and paced.  Just enough plot and characterization that you can follow along and give a shit and not have to take notes to figure out what’s going on.  Back to Jeff Bridges.  He’s awesome in this flick.  He deserves to be all the fucking rage he wants to be.
  • Shutter Island: yeah, I know, picking a Scorcese/DiCaprio is really stepping out of the fucking box, but its a good flick and I don’t know if anyone else really remembers it.  Great movie, well acted, spooky and weird even if I did figure out the “twist-ending” way too early.
  • Inception: Yay, more Leo!  Pretty fucking slick movie and it’s definitely one you’ll have to watch three or four times to fully understand it but its so god damn cool while its going on that it will be like three days before you’re like, “wait, did my fucking brain get sucked out and put in backwards?”  Christopher Nolan is starting to really make some bad ass movies….and Hans Zimmer’s music as always is awesome.
  • Kick-Ass: Everything a comic book movie should be.  Great action.  Exciting fight sequences.  Spot-on sense of humor and just a touch of tragic sadness that help you empathize with the hero.  Cage is awesome as Big Daddy, doing his character with a touch of ‘Adam West Batman’.
  • The Karate Kid: I really thought this would suck but it didn’t.  The soundtrack sucks all kinds of hell.  Was that Justin Bieber in there?  But Jackie Chan should get an Oscar nod.  Your opinion of Jaden Smith might depend on how you feel about Big Willie, because he might be a fucking clone of the Fresh Prince.
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: This might be my favorite flick of the year even though it’s only half way over.  No book to movie adaptions are perfect so don’t go in all nit-picky if you’ve read the books.  Enjoy what may be one of the best beginning to end movie sagas ever.  Seven movies with pretty much the same cast.  What other series has done that?
  • Toy Story 3: Animated movies for adults.  I cried.  My wife cried.  People in front of us and behind us cried.  Kids laughed at us because they don’t get the movie yet.  (my Toy Story 3 review)

There were some other good ones, but I’m not in the mood to defend Tron right now.  Plus let’s focus on the good shit coming out in 2011.  Captain America hopefully won’t suck…..and the end of Harry Potter….plus a new Mission:Impossible.  booyah!!

Happy New Year!!  -t.b. english

‘Toy Story 3’ (2010) — movie review

Who’s in it?: voices of Tom Hanks (Big, Turner and Hooch), Tim Allen (TV’s Home Improvement, Galaxy Quest), Michael Keaton (Batman, Mr. Mom)

Bravo, Pixar.  If you’ve seen the first two movies and enjoyed them, then you’ll love this one.  The fact is all, or at least most Pixar movies are amazing.  Not only because of the animation, but the story telling is top notch; Bug’s Life, The Incredibles, Wall*E, Up.  Maybe not Cars.  I still don’t get that one.  Talking cars that race in front of an audience of other talking cars?  What the —-?  It’s a little perverse isn’t it?  So, except for Cars, which was stupid, the rest of the movies have been pretty damn good.  Mainly because they are more aimed at adults than the animation would leave you to believe.  Well guess what?  This one will kick adults right in the nuts.  Without mercy.  Kids won’t get the real impact of this movie for 20-25 years.

I will get into that here in a few, but this movie pissed me off because it was so good and it just showed how much movies have God damn sucked this year.  When Toy Story 3 is one of the best movies that comes out over the summer, for me a 30 something year-old man, there is a real problem.

Back to Woody and Buzz. Like I said, this movie is going to kick most adults right in the sack.  I don’t care if you have a sack or not, you’re gonna cry during this movie.  Try not to.  I dare you.  Look we’ve all had to grow up, right?…and it sucks.  You know it and I know it.  And we all know the best time of our lives was our childhood.  We all wish we could go back to the days when our biggest problem was not having enough time in the day to play with all of our toys fairly and equally.  And if you have kids now, you see that again in them.  You want them to enjoy their childhood and try and tune out all of the violence and evil in this God damned world and just play with their Star Wars guys.

But you can’t.  And this movie is going to remind you of that time in your life.  Then you will look at your children.  They will look back at you and smile and then they will make fun of you for crying at the end of Toy Story 3 because they will think you’re an idiot.  Then someday when they have kids, show them that flick again.  Niagara Falls, baby.  Payback is a bitch.

8/10

Would I recommend this?: If you can’t enjoy Toy Story, I can’t help you.
