BK Films and TV: Best Flicks of 2010

Well, I figured its about time I posted this.  But doing this entry I realized two things.  One, I didn’t see shit for movies last year and Two, there seemed to be a lot of shit movies that came out.  I even watched 100 Movies I’ve Never Seen Before over the summer, but only a handful were new releases.  Some may be included on this list….and the ones that were really good, that came out at the end of the year, I didn’t see any of them, except for one, which I saw this year.  It’s included in this list.

Tim’s “Best-Of” Two Thousand and Ten, in no particular order:

  • True Grit: Tim loves westerns and Jeff Bridges sure is all the fucking rage these days.  I loved this movie.  I’m not sure it’s AS GOOD as everyone is saying, but it’s pretty fucking good.  Extremely well directed and paced.  Just enough plot and characterization that you can follow along and give a shit and not have to take notes to figure out what’s going on.  Back to Jeff Bridges.  He’s awesome in this flick.  He deserves to be all the fucking rage he wants to be.
  • Shutter Island: yeah, I know, picking a Scorcese/DiCaprio is really stepping out of the fucking box, but its a good flick and I don’t know if anyone else really remembers it.  Great movie, well acted, spooky and weird even if I did figure out the “twist-ending” way too early.
  • Inception: Yay, more Leo!  Pretty fucking slick movie and it’s definitely one you’ll have to watch three or four times to fully understand it but its so god damn cool while its going on that it will be like three days before you’re like, “wait, did my fucking brain get sucked out and put in backwards?”  Christopher Nolan is starting to really make some bad ass movies….and Hans Zimmer’s music as always is awesome.
  • Kick-Ass: Everything a comic book movie should be.  Great action.  Exciting fight sequences.  Spot-on sense of humor and just a touch of tragic sadness that help you empathize with the hero.  Cage is awesome as Big Daddy, doing his character with a touch of ‘Adam West Batman’.
  • The Karate Kid: I really thought this would suck but it didn’t.  The soundtrack sucks all kinds of hell.  Was that Justin Bieber in there?  But Jackie Chan should get an Oscar nod.  Your opinion of Jaden Smith might depend on how you feel about Big Willie, because he might be a fucking clone of the Fresh Prince.
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: This might be my favorite flick of the year even though it’s only half way over.  No book to movie adaptions are perfect so don’t go in all nit-picky if you’ve read the books.  Enjoy what may be one of the best beginning to end movie sagas ever.  Seven movies with pretty much the same cast.  What other series has done that?
  • Toy Story 3: Animated movies for adults.  I cried.  My wife cried.  People in front of us and behind us cried.  Kids laughed at us because they don’t get the movie yet.  (my Toy Story 3 review)

There were some other good ones, but I’m not in the mood to defend Tron right now.  Plus let’s focus on the good shit coming out in 2011.  Captain America hopefully won’t suck…..and the end of Harry Potter….plus a new Mission:Impossible.  booyah!!

BK Films and TV: Worst Flicks of 2010

So I figured if I’m gonna write the good, I’ve gotta write the bad.  By doing this, I realized two different things.  One, I didn’t see shit for movies last year and I still saw a lot of crappy fucking movies; and Two….I guess that’s it, I saw a lot of crappy movies.  When I did my epic 100 Movies I’ve Never Seen Before list over the summer, I saw only a handful of new releases, and yes some may be included on this list…

Without further delay–

Tim’s “Worst-Of” Two Thousand and Ten, in no particular order:

  • Legion: Piece of shit.  Won’t waste anymore time on it.  (my Legion review)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street: One two, Freddy’s coming for you, but don’t worry because he talks like a fucking retard and they spend most of the movie hinting maybe he’s not the bad guy we thought he was.  Zzzzzzzzzz…oh no, I fell asleep.  Boring.  But don’t worry, there is absolutely NOTHING to be afraid of in this movie.
  • Dinner for Schmucks: Not fucking funny.  AT ALL.  I will have my full review up later but let’s just say sometimes having Steve Carrel and Zack Galifianakas acting stupid is sometimes just fucking stupid.  Exhibit A.
  • Cop Out: Oh, my God.  I get to punch Bruce Willis right in the fucking face for this one and don’t even get me started on Tracey fucking Morgan.  Worst.  Kevin Smith movie.  Ever.  and that’s really saying something.
  • Alice in Wonderland: Terrible 3-D.  Terrible FX.  What the hell was up the that dance Johnny Depp does at the end?  Sometimes Tim Burton is just too much and maybe it was too obvious a choice for him to take on Wonderland.  Really liked it the first time I saw it but it gets worse every time I see it.
  • The Losers: Zoe Saldana is HOT but this movie SUCKS.
  • Killers: I didn’t even fucking see this movie, but it has Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl in it, so I’m just gonna call this one crap.

That’s all folks, I’m sure there were some other suckers but let’s not dwell on the past.  Instead we should look forward to what sucks about 2011.  Have you seen the Green Lantern trailer?  I can’t get a feeling on that one yet.

Why the Hell Am I Doing This?

A lot of people have been asking why I decide to do this.  Even more of you think I have way too much time on my hands.  Well, here’s the deal.  I’ve been working for Examiner.com for over a year now as the Kansas City TV writer and the National Lost writer.  When Lost ended in May I was drained and frankly bored with episodic television.  Most of you know me or remember me as being a movie geek.  The truth is I don’t get out to the movies nearly as much as I’d like and I feel like I’ve neglected my love of the movies.

So over Memorial Day weekend I decided I am going to watch 100 movies I’ve never seen before over the summer.  I figured since I work from home and the kids would be here with me for the summer….I’d have plenty of time on my hands.  So the challenge was born.

My rules were simple.  I gave myself from June 1st until August 31st, 2010 to finish, give or take a few days or a weeks or so to account for circumstances that may keep me from daily movie watching….such as having an actual life and a family that might want some of my attention too.  Plus, despite popular opinion, I do have a job, so I’d have to work around that schedule.  Luckily since I work from home, I can usually watch movies while I work.

So, I had 90 days or so to watch these movies.  I didn’t plan any out in advance.  I just figured it would be random.  I thought it would be too hard to plan out 100 different movies.  The movies came from several different sources:

  • Cable: HBO, Starz, Showtime, The Movie Channel
  • Redbox
  • Netflix
  • Theatres
  • Pay Per View flicks
  • and other (borrowed DVDs, etc.)

Some are movies I hadn’t gotten around to seeing yet, others are movies I had never heard of.  Some are kids flicks.  Some are chick flicks.  Some are movies that I knew would suck but dammit if I didn’t watch them anyway.  The challenge wasn’t 100 Movies I WANT to see… It was 100 Movies I HAVEN’T seen.

Any questions?

DISCLAIMER:  If you choose to read my 100 movies blog you are doing so at your own risk.  This blog will not be for the weak of heart as I plan to be very adult (or is it childish?) in how I write it.  Meaning, I intend to use my very rich and extensive vocabulary.  I spend nearly every waking hour with children.  I write for an internet news site in addition to my other writing job.  So dammit, I’m going to use some colorful language from time to time but I’ll try and behave myself….for the most part.

Peace.
