Silly ‘Rise of the Guardians’ could have been a heck of a lot worse — movie review

What if Santa Claus was the leader of magical superheroes whose primary job, besides delivering toys and hiding eggs, was to protect kids– and the world– from villainous characters that would rather strike fear than deliver good-natured holiday cheer. Think The Avengers, except instead of Tony Stark, you have Santa Claus. It’s silly and goofy, but that’s kind of the point. In “Rise of the Guardians” we are introduced early on to Jack Frost (voiced by Chris Pine) after he is resurrected by the man in the moon following a tragic and mysterious accident. ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ will delight adults as much as it will the kiddos — movie review

wreckitralphPICIf you’re a child of the 80’s, you probably have an appreciation for old school video games like Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. You can probably remember the days when graphics were good if a character vaguely looked like it had a human form and when you actually had to use a controller. Forget the Wii or X-Box Kinect. Real video games were played with a joystick and the A and B buttons. Ah, but the age of the video game has evolved. That evolution has been apparent not only in the graphics and gameplay but also the magic of the arcade, a wonderland of video games where kids can play whatever game they want as long as they had a pocket full of quarters…

‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’ (2012) review

Kids are pretty easy to please. So, you’d think the formula for a blockbuster animated movie would be pretty easy. Solid animation, which shouldn’t be hard considering the millions of geeks who can perform quality grade animation without Hollywood’s help; throw in some talking animals, the more unique the better; cast some popular Hollywood actors, who parents may recognize before the kids; put them all in an easy to follow plot that is one part adventure, one part friendship lesson and one part morality tale. Surely, I’m not the only one that has this figured out. The “Ice Age” creators apparently haven’t.
