‘Kick-Ass 2’ still kicks a little ass, just lacks original’s shock and awe factor

Three years ago, “Kick-Ass” burst into theatres and won over a lot of fans with its over the top action and endless one-liners. Besides super heroes are all the rage these days and the R-rated comedy and violence was a surprisingly refreshing change of pace.KickAss2

But the truth is, it worked mainly because of Chloe Grace-Moretz and her, for lack of a better phrase, kick ass turn as the sweet and innocent little bad ass, Hit Girl. But it was funny then because not a lot of girls that age run around with a mouth like that.

Whitaker and Oyelowo lead an all-star cast in ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler

There are movies that hope and dream they might get recognized when it comes to Oscar season and then there are movies that are made for Oscar season. You know the ones: big cast, heavy hitting and possibly controversial subject matter, period setting allowing for elaborate costumes and recreating historical sets…ButlerO

Think “Lincoln” last season. Great movie. Great actors. Twelve nominations, no wins.

This year, “Lee Daniel’s The Butler” offers up a huge cast of whose who actors as we follow Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) learning the ways of a house servant and making his way to the White House, where he serves as a butler for the President of the United States for nearly 40 years.  Continue reading Whitaker and Oyelowo lead an all-star cast in ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler

‘RED 2’ is more of the same but not in a good way

This happens with sequels.  A studio catches lightning in a bottle, makes money, tries to duplicate formula and gets mixed but disappointing results. That seems to be the biggest problem with “RED 2”, starring Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren.

RED2picEveryone is back, which is good I guess. But they don’t seem to be having as much fun. Maybe it’s the plot, which involves Marvin (Malkovich) trying to convince Frank (Willis) their lives are in danger when they are framed for something to do with an old weapon program during the cold war.

So once they are on the run, they have to drag Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker) along, because all she is doing is complaining she wants a gun and wants something to do.
