‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’ may need multiple viewings to understand — movie review

Who’s in it?: Christopher Plummer (Dreamscape, Dragnet the Movie), Andrew Garfield (the next Spider-Man), Johnny Depp, (Nick of Time, Sweeny Todd) and the late, great Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight, A Knight’s Tale)

Directed by: Terry Gilliam (12 Monkeys, Time Bandits)

I am really hoping at some point in my life I will understand this movie, even just a little bit, because this one is all over the place.  I’m not even sure where to start.  This is one movie that I could sit down and tell you every detail and you would still have no clue what the hell was going on if and when you finally saw it.  In fact, the less you know the better.  Let’s just say there is a guy who makes a deal with the devil and of course being the devil there are always strings attached.  So another deal is made for souls.  That’s all you get.  Good luck.

“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” suffers I’m sure, from a real life development that happened during filming.  This is the movie that Heath Ledger was making when he died.  Johnny Depp steps in for him at one point.  So does Jude Law; but unfortunately Colin Farrell replaces him for longer.  It gets to be a little distracting but there is so much else that’s going on that sadly, keeping track of the characters will be the least of your concerns.

But it’s no one’s fault.  Heath died and director Terry Gilliam didn’t want to replace him cuz he’s pretty good in the scenes he’s in.  Plus they did find a way to have the other actors play the same character so that it makes sense.  You know a movie is messed up when three different actors play one character and that’s NOT the confusing part!!

As confusing as the story is, it is visually amazing.  There are a lot of trippy, dreamlike sequences and enough crazy fantasy shit that your eyes might feel like they’re bleeding….in a good way.
